Why Does SIM USA Prepare and Support Global Workers?
SIM USA prepares and supports global workers because overseas ministry is a long-term journey that requires more than just a single season of preparation. Our goal is not only to equip workers before departure, but to provide ongoing care and encouragement. We want workers to remain healthy and effective in global ministry throughout every season.
That is why our approach is relational and long-term. We prepare workers before they go and continue walking with them throughout their service. Along the way, we provide crucial care, support, and connection.
Max and Jill are workers who have seen the value of SIM USA’s training firsthand. They shared that SIM prepared them theologically, equipped them for language learning, and provided comprehensive support for their transition to the field. They believe their training with SIM has played a key role in helping them thrive and endure in their ministry placement.
Their experience reflects a key reality: cross-cultural service is not a one-time transition, but a long-term journey of spiritual formation, support, and faithfulness.
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
How Does SIM USA Prepare Global Workers?
All SIM USA global workers receive foundational training before moving overseas. Training includes cross-cultural orientation, language learning, and support-raising. This ensures they are well-equipped to live and serve cross-culturally.
SIM USA also emphasizes practicing spiritual formation, healthy rhythms, and developing sustainable disciplines. These practices help when workers encounter stress, uncertainty, or difficult circumstances.
“The rhythms we learn when not under duress support us when we are,” Member Care Deputy Director Bob H. said.
Further preparation varies. It depends on a worker’s background, role, and ministry context. Additional preparation may include theological, security, and job-specific training.
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up” Ephesians 4:11-12
How Does SIM Support Global Workers on the Field?
Once on the field, SIM supports workers through a Member Care team, Personnel, and regional leadership. These groups support global workers in unique yet complementary ways.
Member Care
Member Care is divided into three main focus areas: Care Facilitation, Third Culture Kid (TCK) Care, and Prayer & Celebration. Care Facilitators walk closely with workers through the spiritual, emotional, relational, and personal challenges they may face while serving overseas. TCK Care focuses on supporting missionary kids and their unique experiences growing up cross-culturally. Prayer & Celebration encourages workers through intentional prayer and recognition of what God is doing in their lives and ministries.
Personnel
Personnel focuses on the logistical side of global ministry. They help navigate placement decisions, team dynamics, and other logistical aspects of service. Personnel also visits workers on the field when possible. These visits provide unique in-person encouragement and friendship.
Even when they are not together in person, Member Care and Personnel maintain consistent, secure digital contact with workers. SIM USA communication systems enable regular, safe, and timely check-ins with all workers. This secure communication supports ongoing care and connection, ensuring no one slips through the cracks.
“We journey with our teammates to help them be resilient, effective, and joyful as they serve with SIM. We’re working with people where they are spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. We’re walking through whatever it is they’re dealing with,” Bob said. “At our core for each one of us, our hearts beat with a passion for reaching our people to make sure they are able to effectively serve where God has them.”
Regional Directors
Regional Directors are based in each region where SIM serves. They provide on-the-ground support and understand local challenges in real time. The regional leadership in each country helps SIM USA respond promptly and effectively to situations.
“Regional directors are able to keep a pulse on situations in real time … Especially with geopolitical things,” Bob said. “Working in different areas means we need to have a relationship with those directors, so that they know who to reach out to and we know who to reach out to when we’re working with different situations… So, we are very intentional to try and make that work well.”
At the SIM USA office, each region of the world where we serve is also assigned a dedicated Personnel Deputy. These deputies build relationships with regional leadership in their respective areas. Those relationships allow for timely communication and coordinated responses when needed. For example, if a worker is struggling, their regional director can immediately contact their Personnel Deputy. The deputy will then help coordinate a timely response.
Whether serving in traditional ministry or through Alternate Pathways, workers are all fully cared for. Member Care, Personnel, and regional leadership walk with SIM USA workers through every high and low.
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
