What Training Do SIM USA Workers Receive?

Once applicants are approved to serve with SIM USA, they receive thorough training to prepare them for overseas ministry. This preparation lasts from the time of approval through launching to their country. It focuses on cross-cultural ministry, language learning, and support raising.

“The training SIM gave us was very beneficial,” Jill, a SIM USA worker, said. “I felt like we were well equipped to go to the field. We were surprised that we ran into some situations that were exactly what we had trained for.”

Training happens through online courses, partner organizations, and in-person preparation on the SIM USA campus. Together, these experiences provide you with practical skills and knowledge for global ministry.

“We want to do right by our workers. We want to do the honorable thing and make sure they are well prepared. So right now, this is what the Lord has given us to help people get to that point,” Training and Development Lead Erin B. said.

Online Courses

After being approved to serve with SIM USA, you receive access to our online training website. The online courses introduce topics like financial stewardship, church relationships, and cybersecurity.

This training gives everyone a strong foundation while also considering background and future ministry role. Most courses are mandatory for every worker. Others may be optional based on experience. For example, someone who is brand new to global ministry may need different training than someone who has previously lived in another culture.

Online training is designed to be flexible, so you can complete courses at a pace that fits your daily life. Many courses are divided into short sections. This makes it possible to do small portions throughout the day.

Partner Organizations

SIM USA partners with trusted organizations to provide further cross-cultural training. You may train at Mission Training International (MTI), Global Frontier Missions (GFM), or the Center for Intercultural Training (CIT). These places offer specialized preparation for global workers.

SIM works closely with these organizations to determine the best fit for you. We consider factors like your ministry location, previous experience, family needs, and travel costs. Working with these partners ensures you have excellent preparation for ministry.

On-Campus Training

Workers gather at the SIM USA campus in Charlotte for in-person training. This training builds on the online courses you have already completed. Through interactive sessions, group activities, shared meals, prayer, and small groups, you strengthen your spiritual foundation, build relationships, and prepare for cross-cultural ministry.

The training focuses on spiritual vitality and practices to sustain you throughout global ministry. You will also learn about support-raising and communicating with ministry partners. Additional sessions prepare you for the realities of life and ministry overseas. This includes security training, cultural differences, and serving as a single or married person. Throughout the training, you receive guidance tailored to your specific situation.

The in-person experience concludes with a time of prayer and commissioning. All workers are encouraged and prayed over by the SIM USA office.

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” Ephesians 4:11-12

How Long Does It Take to Train with SIM USA?

The timeline for preparing to serve overseas can vary greatly from worker to worker. Some people complete the process in less than a year. Others may take longer depending on their personal circumstances and the needs of their ministry location.

For most workers, the process takes about nine months to two years from start to finish. Factors such as finishing school or starting a family can affect the timeline. The timing of departure also depends on the needs of your ministry country. For example, you may complete your training but need to wait until your country is ready to receive you.

The goal is not to send you as quickly as possible. It is to help you arrive equipped, supported, and ready for long-term ministry.

“It doesn’t have to be two years. It can be faster. A lot of that is driven by the individual, not the pacing of the courses,” Erin said. “If the Lord blesses you and wants you on the field, He will get you there.”

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3
