How do I Know if I’m Called to Missions?

Is God Calling Me to Missions?

Deciding to serve as a missionary is an incredibly important, life-changing decision. It involves prayer, discernment, and a willingness to step into something new. Many people wonder how to know with certainty that God is leading them to missions.

Ultimately, each person’s calling is unique. Whether you are being led to a specific country or are just beginning to explore missionary service, our SIM USA office workers are here to answer your questions, walk alongside you, and support you through every step of the journey.

“The call to missions is different for every person. Some hear the voice of God very clearly calling them to go to a specific place. Others simply have a desire to bring the gospel to the nations and trust God to lead them in that pursuit,” Ian, a SIM USA mobilization coordinator, said.

Alli, another mobilization coordinator, added, “If you feel a nudge or pull toward missions, that is a great place to start.”

As SIM USA President Randy Fairman often says, if there is even a 10% chance God may be leading you to missions, it’s worth exploring. So, what does it look like to take the next step in understanding that call?

How do I Discern God’s Will?

Discerning God’s will for your life happens through prayer and community.

Our motto at SIM USA is “By Prayer.” This means prayer is woven into every part of our lives and work. It guides our choices and fuels our ministries, reminding us that we rely fully on God for direction and provision.

That same commitment to prayer carries into how we walk with those discerning a call to missions. We believe that intentional prayer and community are essential to discernment. This often means inviting loved ones to pray alongside you for God’s guidance.

“Regardless of what your journey looks like, we believe that prayer is a critical part of the discernment process. Ask not only if God is calling you to go, but also if He’s calling you to stay,” Ian said. “We also believe discernment is a team sport. If you sense God might be calling you to missions, talk to other people and ask them to pray with you and to speak into how they see God leading you.”

In the early church, major decisions were often made in the context of prayer and community. In Acts 13:2–3, it was while the church was worshiping and fasting together that the Holy Spirit set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which God had called them. In the same way, we believe discernment is not meant to happen in isolation. God often confirms His leading through the prayers, wisdom, and counsel of other believers.

Rather than walking this path alone, we encourage individuals to invite trusted family members, friends, and church communities to pray with them, ask questions, and seek God’s direction together.

Where is God Calling Me to Serve?

Deciding which country to serve in does not need to happen right away. For many missionaries, clarity around location comes later, after time spent in prayer and community discernment. Rather than rushing to choose a country, this season can be an opportunity to focus on listening to God, growing in understanding of global missions, and remaining open to where He may lead.

Alli suggests using this time to engage intentionally in prayer for the nations. One helpful resource is the Joshua Project “Unreached of the Day” website, which highlights a different unreached people group each day. Praying regularly for people around the world can broaden your perspective, deepen your heart for the nations, and help you become more aware of where God may be leading you.

Once you have been approved to serve with SIM USA, your Applicant Coordinator will walk alongside you as you discover where God is guiding you. They can help connect you with ministry fields that align with your gifts and experience, and they will guide you through conversations with field leaders as God’s direction becomes clearer.

“We are a field-driven organization, which means our placement of missionaries is based on the needs we see in the field. The type of work that can be done varies greatly from place to place,” Ian said. “Basically, we want to discover your skills, gifts, and passions, and then determine where that best fits with what God is doing in countries around the world.”

You may also have the opportunity to go on a “Vision Trip,” where you can visit the country you’re exploring and experience the ministry firsthand. These trips allow you to spend time with local leaders and missionaries, gaining a clearer picture of daily life and missions in that context.

You don’t have to have everything figured out at the beginning. Discernment is a process, and SIM USA is committed to walking with you through each stage.

Are Short-Term or Long-Term Missions Right for Me?

When determining whether to serve short-term or long-term, it can be helpful to gain initial experience and explore what missions look like for you.

Alli suggests starting by serving locally with another people group, exploring whether your church offers short-term overseas opportunities, or visiting Global Frontier Missions to receive training and gain hands-on ministry experience among different people groups.

Short-term missions with SIM USA are longer than two months but shorter than a year. They are designed to support ongoing ministry in a country and introduce people to what it’s like to serve there. It offers individuals a chance to see God’s work firsthand in their country of interest. This is a great starting point for those interested in future long-term service.

If you have prior ministry experience and sense God leading you to serve in one country for more than two years, long-term service may be a strong fit. Long-term missions with SIM USA last two or more years. We are passionate about long-term missions because they allow workers to build deep relationships, become part of the local community, and invest in sustainable ministry that has a lasting impact.

From local outreach to short-term trips or long-term service, each step helps you understand God’s leading and discover how your gifts fit into His global mission.

What Mission Organization Should I Partner With?

It’s important to visit in person when choosing a mission organization. It can be especially helpful to invite your pastor to come with you.

Meeting face-to-face helps you understand the organization and how they do ministry. It’s important to partner with a place that shares your faith and values.

This is why SIM USA hosts multiple Connect events each year. At Connect, people learn about global missions and SIM USA, and they pray about their next steps.

Hannah previously attended Connect. She liked exploring missions at Connect without feeling pressured to commit to anything.

“It’s a really valuable experience that they offer to meet people in person. You don’t get the same sense, necessarily, when you meet people over Zoom, or when you’re just checking out somebody’s website,” Hannah said. “I think it’s one thing to just read the values because there’s so many good organizations that use similar language in their core values. But I think when somebody is actually talking about the core values of the organization, you’re able to hear the personality and the passion come through.”

Attending a Connect event lets you experience the heart of SIM USA firsthand. You can decide if SIM is right for you by meeting our team, asking questions, and connecting with others.

Take the Next Step in Missions with SIM USA

No matter where you are in discernment—just beginning to explore missions, feeling a gentle nudge, or hearing a clear call—remember that it is a process that unfolds through prayer, community, and time.

“Questions and concerns are normal,” Alli said. “The process involves one step of faith at a time.”

Together, we can explore God’s calling, pray through the process, and discover how He wants to use your gifts to make a lasting impact.

Your journey begins with a single step, and we can’t wait to walk it with you.
