How Can I Use Business in Missions?

What Is a Missional Business?

Missional businesses are self-sustaining companies that create employment for local people who often have little or no access to the gospel. By operating with integrity and care, these businesses strengthen families and communities. They also build genuine relationships where the love of Jesus can be seen and shared.

These businesses provide a strategic way for Christians to live and work in least-reached countries where traditional ministry may be limited. Professionals, entrepreneurs, and skilled workers can serve as faithful witnesses in everyday settings.

As trust grows in the workplace, natural opportunities emerge. Christians can share the gospel, disciple new believers, and support the growth of local churches. In this way, missional businesses become platforms for long-term gospel witness in places where Jesus is not yet widely known.

Andrew and Melanie serve in South Asia, where they lead a business focused on equipping and mentoring Christians to live out their faith in the marketplace. This includes discipling local believers and walking alongside them as they grow in their own business ventures.

“Business is all about people. It’s all about connection. That’s the exciting part about business—it’s a great way to get involved in ministering to people in more restricted countries,” Andrew said.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35

Do I Need Business Experience to Run a Missional Business?

No, you don’t need prior business experience to run a missional business. While having a background in business can be helpful, it is not required. SIM USA provides training to help you start and grow a missional business.

SIM USA resources include:

  • Job connections through recruiters and missional businesses
  • Hands-on business training—from idea to launch
  • Mentorship and investor support for new ventures
  • Practical training on living out your faith in the marketplace

Many workers, like Andrew and Melanie, have found these types of resources invaluable as they start their own businesses. They especially appreciate guidance from local mentors and business partners.

“We have cultural insiders, like a local accountant who knows what’s happening. So, build a team of people who know the context you come from, but also the context you’re working in, or the field you want to work in. Have mentors, listen to them, build a team, and work with local people in the community as much as you can,” Melanie said.

With the right training, support, and a willingness to learn, anyone with a heart to serve can start a missional business. Success does not come from prior experience alone. It comes from consistently showing up, building relationships, learning from local mentors, and growing with the community.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

What is Daily Life Like in Missional Business?

Life for workers with missional businesses often looks surprisingly normal. Global workers carry out their jobs with dedication, build friendships, and invest in their cities and towns. They just do these things in least-reached countries.

“Our life looks a lot like yours. We come, and we love our neighbors, and we work a job. We go to our neighbor’s house for tea, and we tell them that God loves them,” Melanie said. “It just looks like being a part of the community and learning to love people well in the places where they are. Those places are in their homes, drinking chai, in the marketplace, at work, or wherever else.”

In these everyday moments, relationships take root and deepen. Andrew saw this firsthand through his friendship with Rasheed.

Although Rasheed had grown up in the church and followed Jesus, he was wary of foreign mission workers. He had seen many come and go—staying briefly, then leaving without returning. Because of this, trust did not come easily.

That began to change when Andrew entered his life. Instead of leaving, Andrew stayed. He showed up consistently and discipled Rasheed not as a project, but as a friend.

Over time, that steady presence built trust. As their friendship deepened, Andrew was also able to come alongside Rasheed in practical ways. He helped him develop his own thriving business.

“We really learned from each other through that process,” Andrew said. “It’s a wonderful gift because I could then see the fruits of what’s been happening in his life.”

Everyday activities, like work, shared meals, and building friendships, are powerful ways to show God’s love. Life for workers in least-reached areas looks fairly normal. But each normal moment can bear eternal fruit.

“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8
