How Does Local Ministry Equip You for Global Missions?
The journey toward global missions begins close to home. Serving in your local community is an important part of preparing for overseas ministry.
There are meaningful opportunities to serve in neighborhoods, churches and local organizations. Serving at home gives you experience and helps you learn what it means to live missionally.
Applicant Coordinator Team Lead Sarah M. said that workers will typically serve overseas similarly to how they serve at home. If ministry is not already part of your everyday life at home, adjusting to service overseas can be challenging.
“There’s nothing magical about moving internationally that changes your habits or your pastimes. So, developing those habits and patterns of ministering within your local church and community creates a lifestyle that can be adapted to a new context,” Sarah said.
Developing these ministry rhythms at home helps you enter a new culture well.
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10
How Does SIM USA Evaluate Ministry Experience?
When you apply to serve with SIM USA, we consider your experiences and readiness for global ministry. We ask questions like:
- Where does your sense of calling come from? Has it been tested or nurtured?
- What is your relationship like with your local church?
- How has the skill set you’re hoping to use in ministry been developed and used?
For applicants who have limited ministry experience, we may recommend additional training. One option is Global Frontier Mission (GFM), our partner organization. They combine classroom instruction with hands-on ministry. Participants serve alongside refugees and people from many different cultural backgrounds.
Ultimately, we want our workers to enter their new contexts well-equipped and ready to serve. Prior ministry experience is an important part of preparing for that transition.
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” Proverbs 16:3
How Can I Get Involved in Local Ministry?
If you are looking for local ministries to serve with, the best place to start is often your own church. Talk with church leaders about ways you can help out and become involved.
Perhaps your church offers ministries that serve people from different cultural backgrounds. Getting involved with these ministries can provide valuable experience for overseas work. You can learn to communicate, serve, and share your faith with people whose backgrounds are different from yours.
The important thing is to start where you are. Invest in the church God has placed you in, look for opportunities to serve, and ask God to use those experiences to equip you for global ministry.
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” Galatians 5:13
Global Ministry Starts at Home: Andrew and Katie’s Story
As *Andrew and *Katie pursued global ministry, they also served people in their own community. They volunteered with refugee ministry and sought opportunities to work with people from different cultures.
Those experiences helped them develop a missional lifestyle before they ever moved overseas. Today, Andrew and Katie serve with SIM USA in West Africa. Here, they continue to minister to people of different cultures and religions.
“If you can’t work cross-culturally where you are, why would you think you could do it across the sea? So, start working locally and cross-culturally through refugee ministry, or after-school programs, or sports ministries. Find a way to get involved,” Andrew advised.
“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.” Romans 12:6-8
Preparing for overseas service doesn’t mean putting ministry on hold until you cross a border. It means learning to serve, build relationships and share the love of Jesus wherever God has you now.
