Optometry in Missions: Justin and Elya’s Journey to Paraguay with SIM USA
When Justin and Elya began exploring missionary service, they searched online for mission opportunities that would align with their skills and passions. Justin, an experienced optometrist, hoped to find mission work where he could use his expertise in eye care.
To his surprise, resources for optometrists in missions were scarce. It soon became clear that God was leading him to serve in a new way within missions, beyond what he had ever imagined.
As Justin and Elya continued praying and searching for mission opportunities, God led them to SIM USA. There, Justin finally discovered an opportunity where his skills as an optometrist could make a real difference.
“It was one of those ‘light from heaven’ moments,” Justin recalled. “They invited me to go to Paraguay to do optometry, and through that work, connect with people, share Jesus, and help build His Kingdom.”
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10
How Optometry Opens Doors for Indigenous Ministry in Paraguay
Justin and Elya serve among indigenous communities in Paraguay, many of whom have never encountered the gospel. For decades, missionaries have struggled to gain access to these groups. However, Justin’s optometry work has become a bridge, opening doors to connect with these people.
Their first step is to approach the chief, respectfully asking permission to enter the community. Because outsiders have often caused harm in the past, many chiefs are understandably cautious about welcoming missionaries. But when the chief learns that Justin is offering free eye care for the community, suspicion gives way to trust, and doors that were once closed begin to open.
Justin and Elya are open about their roles as missionaries. When Justin offers free eye care, he also explains his desire to share his faith with the community. Because the service he provides meets such a vital need, the chiefs are often willing to listen and allow space for conversation.
“It builds rapport really quickly. They are able to learn, ‘This guy doesn’t want anything in return. He just wants to love on us,” Justin said.
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18
Easter in Paraguay: How God Orchestrated a Village Gospel Encounter
One Easter, Justin returned to a familiar community to share the story of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. In the past, villagers here would often greet him eagerly, ready to hear God’s Word.
But this time, the village felt unusually quiet. Only a single woman stood nearby. Justin hesitated, unsure if he should leave and try again another day.
“Okay, God, what am I supposed to do here?” he prayed quietly, feeling the weight of uncertainty.
Even though leaving seemed logical, a gentle conviction urged him to stay. Trusting God, Justin walked to his car to gather his teaching materials.
When he turned back from the car, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Twenty people had appeared, sitting in a semi-circle, waiting for him. None of the faces were familiar, except for the woman he had noticed earlier, who ran over to join the group. Justin realized God had planned everything, and he simply needed to be obedient. It was time to share the gospel.
“It was beautiful. God orchestrated it,” Justin said.
The group sat quietly, fully attentive, as Justin shared the story of Jesus. He explained the backstory, showed a video, recounted the resurrection, and shared his personal testimony.
“You can receive this free gift too,” he concluded. “If you want, we can pray together.”
The people were visibly moved; Justin even saw two men wiping away tears. One by one, they began raising their hands to pray.
“It was really special, and it seems very clear that the Holy Spirit orchestrated that. If He orchestrated that, I can also assume He was able to touch people and brought them there for a reason,” Justin said. “I tried to figure out who those people were, but I haven’t seen them again. I still have no idea who they are, but we’re just praying the Holy Spirit could use that encounter.”
“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13
