Making an Impact
Around the World
“The wave of patients ill with COVID-19 has peaked,” a concerned Dr. Stephen Hawthorne reported to us from a SIM-sponsored clinic in the foothills of the Cerro Rico Mountain in Potosí, Bolivia.
Potosí is one of the highest-altitude cities in the world and home to our planet’s largest silver deposit. Many local miners who live there already suffer from severe, pre-existing lung ailments.
So when the coronavirus hit the area, it hit hard, endangering many.
Fast Action from SIM USA Partners Helped Rush Personal Equipment and Supplies
Medical workers at the clinic needed to quickly arm themselves with the protective equipment, gear, and supplies. Support from friends like you helped save lives by delivering the following essential items to Dr. Hawthorne and his staff:
- Cleaning supplies
- Personal protective equipment
- Infrared non-contact thermometers
- Protective in-office cabins
- Plexiglass barriers
- And more
“We realized our nurse receptionist was being exposed to high viral loads in the waiting room,” said Dr. Hawthorne. “So we used funds to build a protective cabin around her desk. We also put plexiglass shields along the fronts of our desks in all the consulting rooms.”
Healing Body and Spirit
“Our patients continue to seek us out as a place of care, a place to be prayed for and find healing,” shared Dr. Hawthorne. “We thank God for not being overcome by adversity. And we thank God for SIM having our backs during this most difficult year.”
