Abby Strohman So although my trip to Paraguay is over, it has continued to alter my life. Upon adjusting to my home culture, a lot of things have changed inside me. So here we go again, It’s hard to be in one place when your heart is in another. I am back at school and all settled in and don’t get me wrong I have missed my friends and am enjoying college, but apart of me always goes back to the incredible experience I had this summer in Paraguay. Word’s are just not adequate in expressing the love I have for that place and for the amazing people I met. I don’t want to romanticize it and say that it was easy, because it was 100% the opposite of that. It was hard, so difficult with a number of barriers: language, culture, (literal barriers, like having to stop because there … Read More

Abby Strohman So, I’ve been avoiding writing this blog for awhile now, but I finally decided to finish it off. I don’t know how to even begin to recap everything that happened in Paraguay and to accept that it has officially come to a close. While I have missed family and friends back home, I was nowhere near being able to understand what it would be like having to leave so many people that I love. Last week I finished my time at the school with the students and left with a full bag full of notes and little trinkets, but a very broken heart. I looked at these students for my last times understanding that I have no idea when or if I will see them again. I heard so many little “I love you” , “I will miss you teacher” and “when will you come back?” That last … Read More

Abby Strohman Another amazing week here in Paraguay, and just another day where I cannot imagine leaving this place and these people. But, I guess that’s a good thing. I’m constantly learning how to rely on God through every and all situations and let me tell ya, it’s been a great place to be! Well, this week and the rest of my time here is pretty much traveling all over the place. This week was youth camp so here is a little bit about what we did and what I’ve been learning! Camp: The camp was in a town called Caazapau and was really fun and had lots of games, sermons, small groups, and free time! The time was fun as although I could not speak a whole lot of Spanish, some of the girls ran with it and learned some basic English phrases to say to me. For instance, … Read More

Abby Strohman Mom: “You know you come back to the states in a month right?” Me: “Ummm…excuse me?” WOW WOW WOW! Time has passed so incredibly quickly! I don’t want to imagine leaving this place, but it is starting to sink in what a small amount of time I have left here. Needless to say…God has continued to rock my world this week. So, here is a little bit about what has been going on specifically! School: This week has been AMAZING. Although my language ability is still very low, I have learned so much more and am able to better communicate to the students. SUCH A PRAISE!! I taught the 4th grade class I “I’ve got the joy down in my heart” and it was a HIT. Let me tell you guys, there is nothing like listening to a bunch of kids singing so happily about Jesus (and yes, … Read More

Abby Strohman What a week. It has been pretty crazy, but hey that has become normal! I know every week seems to be about the same in terms of what I do, but it is crazy how things still seem to be constantly changing. Ending this week, I can confidently say that I could see myself doing this more long term, whether that be a few years…or more, I’ll leave that up to God. For now, my hands are open to whatever He has planned. So here is what happened a bit: School: I’m going to be completely honest. This week was not easy for me as I had a few difficulties in terms of teaching demonstrations and explanations. The beginning was tough as things seemed to never go right and I often struggled finding the words (learning a language is a VERY humbling experience by the way). My motto … Read More

Abby Strohman Well, I just wanted to send another update about how things are going here in Villarrica! I am settled in and really enjoying getting to know my host family and the kids and teachers at the school much better. So here is a little update about everything: School: Well, I am settled in and starting to learn all the kids names…which is much more difficult since I have never heard about 80% of them before! I am really enjoying working with the students, although many times it can be overwhelming with so many kids shouting my name at once. Learning words like “entiende?”, “Espera!”, “Escuchen!” and so many other words to get the students to atleast look your direction has become very important. Learning how to adjust the different environment of Latin American classroom as opposed to what I was used to back home has been a very … Read More

Abby Strohman I have had so many things happening this week and it has been so great! Everything around me no longer feels so foreign (except for the language, that is still very foreign!). I have gotten used to the showers that sometimes aren’t hot, wearing lots of layers to bed, using my phone as my only mirror, and allowing my hair to go all natural. There have been a lot of little things that remind me how incredibly blessed we are back home. School: Teaching at the school has been a really cool experience already. It can be overwhelming at times when there are four different kids asking you questions in another language while I am holding about 4 other books in my hand to help other students, all the while having to think in my head of how to translate instructions….I am going to be an EXPERT at … Read More

Abby Strohman Hello everyone! I just wanted to send a little update about what is going on currently! To start off with, I made it through the flights relatively easily and made it to Ascuncion, Paraguay on Wednesday afternoon! I then headed to the main quarters for missions in Paraguay and had a brief orientation there with the supervisor (Tom) and financial administrator. We worked out the details and that night got to go over to Tom’s house and eat wonderful Paraguayan cookies and talk about our testimonies and what brought us to Paraguay specifically. It is cool how God drew me and Susy to Villarrica in such different ways, yet we still have such similar interests! Thursday morning we headed off to Villarrica. Upon arriving in Villarrica, we went to the family that would host us and got settled into a past work shed that got fixed up for … Read More

Abby Strohman What an amazing week. I have met the most incredible people and heard an insane amount of God stories. I have sat under the teachings of many missionaries who have committed their lives to God and lived in circumstances most people wouldn’t even consider. As this week has gone on, I’ve had all kinds of things running through my head…excitement, worry, anxiety…a little bit of everything! What is really great is the people I’ve met and how my fellow peers have helped me to strive on. Their hearts for their mission this summer is awesome to see (sidenote: really great to know I’m not the only one embarking on going to a country in SA with very little spanish knowledge). Something that has stuck out to me this week is the verse Matthew 28:19-20, which is the general missions verse. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, … Read More
